An unusual plant known as the squirting cucumber boasts a fascinating reproductive strategy, intriguing naturalists since ancient times. This plant launches its seeds over distances far exceeding its size in a rapid explosion lasting about 0.03 seconds. The ripe fruit, approximately 1.6 inches long, ejects seeds with sticky liquid at speeds reaching 45 miles per hour and covering distances up to 33 feet.

Found across the Mediterranean, Europe, and parts of northern Africa, Australia, Asia, and North America, the squirting cucumber is part of the gourd family, which includes zucchini and pumpkins. Its seed dispersal technique is unique and rare among plants. Its explosive nature was first noted by Roman naturalists, who warned of the seeds’ dangerous trajectory.

Recent advancements have provided insight into this mechanism, revealing it to be more than a simple pressure release. The eruptive process accounts for other physical changes that influence the angle and distance of the seed’s ejection. “It is a new idea that optimal seed dispersal is not only about building the greatest pressure in the fruit.”

Researchers used high-speed video and CT scans to study the plant’s internal structure, collecting data on its explosive mechanics. This research uncovered that days before a seed launch, fluid within the fruit increases, causing the stem to thicken and lift the fruit to a more advantageous 45-degree angle for dispersal. Additionally, as the stem shrinks, it imparts a spin to the fruit, effectively spreading the seeds over a wider area.
